Okonomiyaki is one of Osaka specialty food. You can find it everywhere in Osaka. You can cook it yourself or let the staff cook for you. It’s made of a batter of flour, with shredded cabbage, sometimes with onions, meat (you can choose pork, beef, octopus, shrimp, etc). Topped with seaweed flakes and katsuoboshi (bonito flakes) with special mayonaise. While you cook your okonomiyaki, you can see the bonito flakes ‘dancing’.
Our first Okonomiyaki was with pork. Mr. F cooked it for us. Hehe
The second okonomiyaki was konnyaku okonomiyaki. It has no taste and it’s like gelatin. Both taste delicious. I should try other toppings some other time. 🙂
Some people think that okonomiyaki is inspired by a pancake or called as japanese pizza. Okonomiyaki restaurant let the customer cook themselves as they served the teppan-grill for each table. Each region in japan has different style of okonomiyaki, like Hiroshima style cooked with yakisoba.
